Earning An MBA Online

The first thing you need to know about earning an MBA online is it’s not easy. Online MBA students are held to the same standards as on-campus students and even more is expected of them thanks to the nature of the online earning environment. Because online learning environments require students to log on for a set number of hours per semester, download and review all materials on their own in a timely manner, and keep track of class activities without the physical presence of an instructor, online MBA students must work well with little supervision, and they must be disciplined, organized, and computer savvy.

Although this may sound like online environment is completely different from the on-campus environment, there are many similarities. Online classes offer all the normal activities of a traditional learning environment, but students must use presentation software such as WebCT, BlackBoard, or FirstClass, to interact with other students, submit assignments, and ask questions. In some cases, podcasts and other distance learning technologies may be included. Online students must also participate in discussions by responding to other students (and the instructor) in an intelligent manner. In many cases, responses have a required word limit, typically no less than 250-300 words. In some cases, responses must be 500 words or more, depending on the course. One word answers and answers such as “good post!” are unacceptable responses in virtual classrooms.

Online MBA students will have to complete the same advanced business courses as on-campus students. Core courses account for 40 percent of the MBA curriculum and include:

-Accounting
-Business Strategy
-Economics
-Finance
-Human Resources
-Marketing Management
-Manufacturing and Production
-Operations Management
-Statistics
-Technology and Information Systems

Specific course titles include financial accounting, marketing strategy, and managerial economics as well as leadership development, managerial statistics, operations strategy, financial planning and analysis, strategy, structure and incentives, and global economic environment. Social networks and social capital may also be required.

Applying to Online MBA Programs, Options, and Other Requirements

Before applying to the program, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required for undergraduate students with a GPA less than 3.2. This requirement can be waived for applicants that already hold an advanced degree. Students that have a 2.5 to 3.1 GPA can request a waiver if they complete several advanced business courses with a grade of "B" or higher. Each school will have its own course requirements for the waiver.

Online MBA applications are usually reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year. Most school offer 6 sessions per year. In order to be admitted, you must have an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. A GPA of 3.0 is required for most top online programs. Many colleges do not require an undergraduate degree in business, however students that hold a degree with a non-business major are required to complete 16 additional credits (four courses). Most Online MBA programs consists of 48 credit hours (12 courses) for students who have earned a business-related bachelor’s degree.

Online MBA students have the option of selecting a standard or accelerated track. The standard track consists of taking one course per academic term. This is a common track for students with full-time jobs. The accelerated track is a good option for students working less than full-time and those interested in earning their degree at a faster pace. The accelerated track consists of taking two courses at a time. This means students could finish the entire program in as little as one year. It is important to note that the typical online MBA student spends 10-12 hours per week for each course they take.
