How to Make Chili

Chili is perhaps one of the most popular dishes in the country—if not elsewhere, too. In essence, a chili is a dish that’s basically a thick stew with beans and tomatoes. These two ingredients, as well as other spices to give the dish that spicy flavor, should be enough to create a chili that’s to die for. However, the beauty of chili is its simplicity and flexibility. In other words, there’s no one way to make chili. There are several chili recipes out there, all of them working on the concept of chili as a stew but using different ingredients to divert from the traditional chili dish.

For instance: the traditional chili is tomato-based, while those who aren’t fans of tomato-based dishes can try the equally scrumptious white chili. There’s a vegetarian chili if you’re not into meat or if you want to be healthy with your food intake or you even screw the beans and use other ingredients instead. Interestingly, official chili cook offs by the International Chili Society do not allow the use of beans in chili dishes (although the chili recipes you know probably use a healthy amount of beans).

Recipe for the traditional chili dish

But since you have no intentions of joining such contests, let’s stick with the All-American favorite—the tomato-based bean chili. Here are the ingredients for one of the most enduring chili recipes ever:

  • Two pounds of cubed beef chuck roasts

  • 15 ounces of can chili beans and 15 ounces of can kidney beans

  • Six ounces tomato paste and 14 ounces diced tomatoes

  • Chili powder (about two tablespoons or according to your preference)

  • Jalapeno pepper and hot pepper sauce

  • Two chopped onions, Four minced garlic gloves, oregano leaves, three chopped celery, pepper and cayenne pepper (according to preference, although less than a teaspoon would do).

The number of the chili ingredients makes it seem as if this dish is very complicated. However, do not work; chili is probably one of the easiest recipes to follow, as long as you know your kitchen basics. First, toss the beef in a mixture of flour, pepper, and salt. Throw the beef in a skillet with olive oil heated on medium heat. After around five minutes (or until the beef is brown), remove the beef. Place in a slow cooker. Add garlic and the onion to the skillet. Pour water and make it boil. After the ingredients are cooked, add it to the slow cooker. Pour other ingredients as well. The stew should be done in less than 10 hours, although you have to make sure the stew is thick enough to be served.

You can change the ingredients according to your preference, although the base of this dish is the tomato ingredients and the chili powder and the pepper materials. You can, however, replace the beans with more meat, if that’s to your liking. You can also add more spices as well. You can alter the quantity of the spices here, especially the pepper and the chili powder. If you want something strong, you will probably have to add more.

Vegetarian chili recipe

What to enjoy the chili without the beef and any kind of meat? It’s simple with this amazing recipe. All you need are:

  • 15 ounces of black beans

  • 14 ounces diced tomatoes

  • Crushed red pepper flakes

  • Olive oil, diced onions, chopped red and green bell pepper, picante, and cumin

  • Chili powder and crushed red pepper flakes

This chili recipe is actually easier than the others (including the one mentioned above). First, sauté your onions in olive oil, then add the garlic, cumin, cayenne pepper (cook it for two minutes) and all the other spices included in the recipe (cook for another two minutes). After which, add all the other ingredients. Mix everything and place in a slow cooker for about 10 hours or until thick enough to be served. This is easier because of the absence of the meat, which is harder to cook. Again, the ingredients can be changed according to your taste, although the tomatoes and beans should remain constant (since this is a vegetarian dish, you can’t use meat to replace the beans). Without the beans, the chili wouldn’t be a chili here.

Easy chili recipe

Here’s a chili recipe for those in a hurry. Don’t have hours for waiting time? This cooking recipe should work just fine. The ingredients are:

  • A pound of ground beef

  • Two diced tomatoes and 14 ounces of tomato sauce

  • 15 ounces of red kidney beans

  • Chili powder, ground cumin, chopped onion, minced garlic, oregano leaves

  • About two tablespoons of flour

  • A cup of water

In a stockpot, sauté your beef with the garlic and onion until it is brown (or, at least, not pink). After this, add the flour. For three minutes, cook this mixture while stirring it, then add all ingredients. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce heat. Let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes and you’re all set! This recipe is easy (and quick) because of the absence of the beans which takes times to cook.

Three Bean Chili recipe

Finally, here’s a great bean chili recipe. Besides the usual spices (14 ounces of diced tomatoes, eight ounces of tomato sauce, chili powder, chopped onion, and crushed red pepper flakes), all you need are 15 ounces of spicy, kidney, black, and pinto canned beans. Put everything in a crockpot and let it cook for six hours, or until is has thickened! Besides being a great vegetarian dish, it’s also perfect for people who like to taste the beans on their chili rather than the meat (which can be overpowering at times).

In any case, the beauty of these chili recipes is they all work with one basic step. From that, you can even create your own chili recipe according to your taste and preference. Do you want to replace beef with chicken or pork, or do you want your chili to be extremely chili? There are many recipes available, but you can also alter those to fit your taste.
